But most of all, I simply enjoy horses. The opportunity to write about them has been a true gift.

Press Box Life at Br Cup

Posted by Maryjean Wall on October 26, 2007

Most people think we have it easy in the press box. Right.

A reporter from the L.A. Times was having Internet problems this afternoon. To his dismay, he discovered that his company’s tech office is now in India. He was trying to get his issues resolved over the phone to India…when the tech person asked, “can you go into your office?” He said, “no, I’m not near Los Angeles, I’m in New Jersey.” To which the techie asked, “well, can you go into the office later this afternoon?”

We in the press box always do our hoodoo dance, praying that we won’t have technical problems. But sometimes, we do. I have heard of some people throwing laptops in anger. At the old Gulfstream Park press box, there was a big hole in the wall created when Andrew Beyer punched his fist at the wall when he lost a race. Someone left the hole there for posterity.

By some miracle, the news gets to the rest of you. Sometimes, I wonder how.

Oh, and by the way, the first two races here at Monmouth today were won by a horse on the lead and by a horse that raced just behind the pace-setter. Heavy mist prevails. It’s cold. It’s miserable.

Ah, too bad the weather there.
Balmy and sunny for the Keeneland crowd.
