Interesting note: NBC Sports’ Bob Costas will lead a roundtable discussion examining the death of the filly Eight Belles at the Kentucky Derby during the network’s coverage of the Preakness Stakes beginning 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Also part of the discussion will be the challenges that lie ahead for the horse racing industry.
Panelists will include Larry Jones, trainer of Eight Belles; Gary Stevens, NBC’s horse racing analyst; Larry Bramlage, equine orthopedic surgeon; Alex Waldrop, President and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, and William Rhoden, columnist for the New York Times.
As the racing writer for the Lexington Herald- Leader, I have won three Eclipse Awards in thoroughbred racing, three Hervey Awards in harness racing, and I have had a lifetime of working with horses, on the track and in the show ring. But most of all, I simply enjoy horses. The opportunity to write about them has been a true gift.
